For their first release, imaginary friends Akka + BeepBeep share the Social Moment EP from Detroit’s Jo Rad Silver. Traversing a range of palettes and styles, the collection of tracks coalesce around a singular focus on hi-tech groovefunk and fine motor city energy.

Crafted during a long hibernation but recorded live as express one-takes somewhere in Midwest Detroit, Social Moment EP rides the rails of dance music and opens portals of punchy house-stonk, voicemail electro, sizzler acid-tech and stilted crooner thumpers. As jorad says, “I don’t know what the hell this music is!!”

Fading in with guitar feedback and tinkling ambiance, “WHO WANT ME” consciously descends into a spacious funk complete with driving basslines and a halftime centerfold that eases the rush up and through.

The title track “SOCIAL MOMENT” lets you know what others have found in you. Social at very right moment, this one dials the tempo to reveal a melancholic and serious slice of Detroit electro.

On the flip, “MAD DOG MOOD'' burns along juicily, hopping through an acidic techno sweller that digs you in deeper with every passing bar and without meaning to. What would you do moody?

To round out the EP, “FIND ANOTHER'' reveals spacious fireside melodica sculpted with expanding synth chordpads and sensual vocal traces. Swaying to and fro, undulating arpeggio waves take control and leave your dancing body in the cloud of dust of your unattached mind.

I read in an interview that the album was composed to provoke a sense of joy, and I feel that. It's startling how "fun" it feels; I think there's some magic in the arrangement and mixing, that elevates the sound design and melodies to great heights.. I can't work out how, which creates a glorious mystery on top of the great sounds. Octagonism
