Company Lab

Where we long to make music with people in person.

The spontaneity and expansive expression that morphs instantaneously onto itself. Vital flashes of emotion and nuance rush out of any sound producing device one can wield. As improvisation undulates into form, training and knowledge evaporate into frequency and rhythm.

Each of these recordings presents a document of nights making music with people in person. All are original compositions written by those present in the moment: friends from other places on their visits to Detroit. All were recorded sometime in 2017 or 2018 at Assemble Sound, on the now extinct second floor, in the Live Room. Overnight access at Assemble revealed a freedom to experiment with recording techniques where the glass window between control and live room opens.

In the new found timespace of the pandemic, I edited, arranged and mixed these sessions into some sort of cohesion, cutting down recordings of over 30 minutes down to what you hear here.

All proceeds will be split amongst organizations chosen by the artists in their respective cities: Montreal, Austin and Chicago.

Tracks 1, 4 and 6 feature Anna Miller of Moon Jelly (@moonjellyetc, SoundCloud.com/moon_jelly) a Chicago-based multi instrumentalist, singer, producer and composer. Track 2 is a dubby drone collaboration with Austin-based violinist Lisa Lam of Mother Falcon. Tracks 3 and 5 Louis Stein and Julian Trivers of the Montreal groove-funk outfit, Busty and the Bass join for two funked out acid burners.
